Mixing Black & Brown
Black and Brown... The dilemma that confuses a lot of men and women who want to do fashion “correctly”. For a long time, and even still, I have heard opposite opinions on what is and isn’t acceptable when mixing black and brown in the same ensemble. Some people will tell you, black belt must be paired with black shoes or brown bag with brown shoes and so on. I’m here to bring my own version of clarity to the discussion and answer the age old question according to me.
Some people think of clothing as strictly function… Well, not to get all “Devil Wears Prada” on everyone but I like to think of clothes and fashion as an way of personal expression and a way to show to the outside world exactly what you are all about as they are passing you on the street.
When it comes to mixing black and brown specifically, I feel like the “don’t do it under any circumstances” rule is as outdated as the rule on when you can or should wear white. Then again, I tend to ignore archaic rules that make no sense or are someones great-grandmother's suggestions.
As long as you do it the right way, it can look chic. Black and brown are both neutrals so theoretically they CAN be mixed but the key to making it look like it's on purpose is to keep it simple. If you are going to mix black and brown, don’t overdo other colors… try to keep it to just one other color or one non-chaotic statement pattern.
One example of appropriate mixing is, if you’re wearing black pants/skirt/top, let your shoes/bag/belt be brown. Another way to tie everything together is to get accessories that mix black and brown together. Proper accessorizing is the key to making everything work and look intentional rather than it looking like you got dressed in the dark.
Regardless, the most important thing is try it on! If it looks a feels good to you… do it! If you’re having second thoughts, ask a friend (the one that actually tells you like it is, not the ones who just try to flatter you).
