Be On TV.. Be An Extra
One thing I feel everyone should experience is working as an extra on a TV or movie set, even if your not an aspiring actor. If you’ve never done it before, it’s a freakin’ blast. Being on set and seeing how a show or movie comes together is one of the most interesting things I’ve probably ever done. And if you're looking at the picture above and thinking... "Jon... Holding a bottle of red wine... what a total typecasting"... WHATEVER, I was in character.
If you live in a major city that is always trying to attract filmmakers, it's literally the easiest thing in town. Most of the time all you have to do is go online to a local casting agency where they post what they need extras for, along with the demographic they are hoping to see. From there you generally just email them a brief description of yourself along with some recent pictures. In San Francisco, the casting agency I used is Beau Bonneau Casting that posts things regularly on Facebook or through their website at: http://www.beaubonneaucasting.com. Otherwise just search online for casting agencies near you.
I was able to be on the set of the HBO series “Looking” with some of my best friends, but the even cooler thing (other than Craft services) is all of the cool people you get to meet, and to be immortalized on film which is pretty damn cool.
"Looking" was a really cool project to be a part of not only because it is set in San Francisco, but the characters and story lines also hit really close to home for me, which made it surreal to watch and see people and things I recognize on screen. Not to mention it was a fun weekly ritual to gather at the Midnight Sun for a watch party every week.
If you've never seen "Looking", you can catch up on HBO on demand, where you can see me in Season 2 episode 1 as "party goer #76" and episode 6 as "Maleficent's hot boyfriend" (look for the hair). The finale wrap up movie for "Looking" premiers on July 23rd on HBO.. check it out!
